Common Mistakes

  • Including unnecessary parameters. Session IDs, tracking parameters, and filter values in URLs create messy, duplicate-prone addresses. Keep parameters out of your canonical URLs and use clean paths instead.
  • Making URLs too long. Stuffing every keyword variation into the URL makes it unwieldy and hard to read. A URL like /best-cheap-affordable-budget-running-shoes-for-men hurts more than it helps. Be concise.
  • Changing URLs without redirecting. Updating a URL structure without setting up 301 redirects from the old URLs breaks existing links, bookmarks, and search rankings. Always redirect old URLs to their new equivalents.
  • Using dates in URLs unnecessarily. URLs with dates like /2024/03/15/my-post make content look outdated when the date passes, even if the content is still relevant. Use dates only when the date is genuinely part of the content's value.
